Grand Challenges in Computing 2006

"Perceptions of Computing"

Date: 22-24 March 2006
Venue: Marriot Hotel, Glasgow

A number of widely varying perceptions of computing are…

  • "One of the most significant advances of the 20th century"
  • "Of vital importance to the future economic prosperity of the UK"
  • "The agent of chaos when projects fail"
  • "Now in nearly 60% of households"
  • "Not the subject I want to study at university"

… these perceptions challenge the UK academic community to deliver world-class applicable research, and exciting degree programmes producing high quality graduates that industry needs.

Pursuing these grand challenges was the subject of a wide-ranging debate at CPHC's 2006 annual conference - supported by the BCS, and incorporating the Grand Challenges Exercise.

At the conference, each of the six current Grand Challenges were reviewed, and discussed in break-out sessions.

In addition, the Steering Committee called for new proposals for Grand Challenges to be submitted to the conference. Two new proposals were submitted, and were discussed at the conference. These have subsequently been added to the current Grand Challenges.
